Bryan Mayhan traveled to Ft. Worth, Texas, October 29 -
November 2, to meet with soil scientists of the Texas
Natural Resources Conservation Service. The meeting included
discussions about the shape of the new TEXPED (Texas Pedon)
project, and the cutting edge of soil data analysis and soil
survey. The advancements created during the TEXPED project
are likely to have national and possibly international
implications. The project stems from current success of the
Missouri Cooperative
Soil Survey Website and the associated MOPED site
centered on the advanced Internet Mapping Server
technologies
developed at CARES. |

Tony
Prato and Dan Fagre have published "Coping
with Climate Change" in the online journal ActionBioscience.
The article concludes: “A pilot program to evaluate the pros and
cons of the proposed adaptive management approach to managing
adverse impacts of climate and landscape change would provide
valuable information. It would develop and evaluate the adaptive
management approach and decision support tool for a sample of
managed ecosystems that encompasses a range of natural resource
and environmental conditions, human uses and values, and
availabilities of scientific information and technical
expertise. Results of the pilot program could be used to
identify conditions under which the approach is most likely to
be feasible (that is, when expected benefits exceed expected
costs).”

Dr. Tony Prato, CARES Co-director, has teamed up with Gamini Herath (Deakin
University, Australia) to co-edit a book entitled Using
Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis in Natural Resource Management.
Tony authored four chapters in the book (i.e., Role of
Multi-Criteria Decision Making in Natural Resource Management,
Multiple Attribute Evaluation of Management Alternatives for the
Missouri River System, Multiple Attribute Evaluation for National
Park Management, and The Future of MCDA in Natural Resource
Management: Some Generalizations). The book applies MCDA to the
management of water, forestry, wetland, and other natural resources
in several countries, demonstrates how MCDA can be used to
substantially improve the design and implementation of natural
resource and environmental policies, and gives in-depth analysis of
the potential problems in applying these techniques.
